COMMITTEE REPORTS
Fundraising
As a result of the last fundraising letter, the flow of contributions coming in has thankfully increased.
Grants
A small group will be put together to discuss our application for the Richardson grant and consider whether we should change our application; check their website carefully to see if we can get any hints as to their considerations; and research other grants that are available and applicable to our needs.
LAKE MANAGEMENT
Treatments – We had the 8 treatments for which we contracted. We did not need the ninth that we had agreed to only if needed. There were a lot of weeds in the lake this year, except around the shoreline and docks where there were treatments. The concern of internal loading when the weeds die off was brought up. On the good side, there were no large mats of filamentous algae. It is a tough balance. We will ask our lake management company, Pond and Lake Connection (PLC), to look into the possibility of increasing herbicide treatments and decreasing algae treatments next year.
Phragmites – We did not receive the Richardson grant which was to cover the cost of the phragmites treatment ($3,700). There are 5 places on the lake that need to be treated: Christ the King Church, MLPA (Christopher Lane), the State boat ramp, the Beach Club and the High School end of the lake. We already have permission from the State to use the chemical needed for the treatment. The treatment would spray the weeds in the lake and those 6-8 feet onto the shore. We need permission from the property owners to spray on their land. It was suggested an agreement be signed by homeowners giving permission (or not) to spray on their land. We had a similar agreement in the past for tree work which we will pull up and edit. Photos will be taken of the areas that need treatment, and a map will be checked to see where we need homeowner permissions.
Nick from PLC recommends 2 treatments. The first would cost $3,700. The second would be $1,500-3,000. We missed the optimal time to treat this Fall, so the treatments would be in April and September of 2022. A motion was made, seconded, and approved to allocate $3,700 for the first phragmites treatment next April.
OLD BUSINESS
Zebra Mussels – One of the cinder block traps has disappeared. The other 2 still show no sign of zebra Mussels.
Boat Launch Sign – The search is still ongoing for the person at the State level who can give us permission to put our sign back up at the boat launch.
Grass Islands – The one island that got lodged into the boat launch area was removed by a friend of the lake with heavy equipment. The other island is still well lodged into grass island.
