Fundraising
The next fundraising letter will be sent out in August. A newsletter will go along with the mailing.
Grants
The Grants Team prepared and submitted three 2022 grant applications: one for phragmites removal; one for the control of curly-leaf pondweed which will begin next spring; and one for removal of dangerous debris on the lake bottom near the cliffs.
Lake Management
– Feedback from Pond and Lake Connection (PLC) was that there is a lot of algae throughout the water column. They are starting to see Diatom (brownish cast to the lake) which inhibits algae growth by blocking some of the sunlight needed for algae growth.
– Lake treatments will be every two weeks through August.
– We have had one phragmites treatment, and the second one is slated for October.
Miscellaneous
Welcome Committee
At the Annual Meeting the Board discussed an additional way to welcome new watershed residents. The Board discussed a type of “Welcome Wagon” with the goal of educating new homeowners about the responsibilities of living on or near the lake and in a watershed. A committee was formed to develop a plan which will be discussed at the September Board meeting.
Mechanical Spillway Update
An investigative meeting was held with three engineering firms regarding this project. They explained that there would be four phases of the project:
– Inspection of the 1750 dam and the spillway, both on the Williams property
…….Topographical survey
…….Hydrological and hydraulic analysis
– Design and Budget of a new dam and spillway
…….Alternatives assessment (3 designs)
…….Preliminary cost opinion
– Final Design and Permitting
– Construction
The whole project could take 2-3 years.
After lengthy discussion, the Board voted and approved moving ahead with the initial stages of the project. Dean Williams abstained.
Dean suggested that someone be the spillway project manager. Board consensus was that Barb Hartman would manage the project.
