Fundraising
To date, contributions are ahead of last year. A newsletter will be going out along with the next fundraising letter.
Grants
A grant request was approved by CT DEEP for MLIF to receive funds for treatments to, hopefully, permanently eradicate Curley Leaf Pondweed from the lake.
Another grant was received from the Richardson Foundation to remove items/debris from the lake in the area of the cliffs. We are awaiting a proposal from an insured company to do the work. We will also research Candlewood Lake Authority to see who they use for this type of work.
Lake Management
There were a total of nine treatments to the lake this year for weeds and algae. The lake is looking good in spite of being down 10-12 inches due to the drought.
The second phragmites treatment along the shoreline will be done this Fall.
Mechanical Spillway & Dam
Barb Hartman was appointed Manager of this project by a vote of the Board 6-0 in favor, with Dean Williams abstaining.
It was reported that we are in contract with Lenard Engineering (LEI) to do a hydrological and hydraulic analysis. We need to engage a second survey firm (RKW Land Surveyor) to do the detailed topographical and GPS work that LEI needs for their analysis. We are awaiting a contract from RKW, but before they can do their work leaves must be off the trees and a lot of the brush must be cleared from the dam and spillway. A motion was approved (with Dean Williams abstaining) to split the cost of the brush removal with the property owners.
A letter was received from the property owners to MLIF outlining their conditions for work to be done on the spillway and dam. Three of the Board members suggested some minor changes to the property owners’ letter. Their suggestions were accepted by the property owners and now MLIF is in full agreement with their conditions.
The Manager will ask LEI if they think either the property owners or the MLIF Board members need extra insurance for this project.
LEI’s inspection report of the dam suggested the removal of 3 large trees on or near the dam. Dean will wait to hear if the State requires the removal of these trees.
